My last assistant has been with me for three years and will be leaving to be an art teacher this
summer. So I am looking for a new assistant to replace her.
You do not need to be "arty" for this position but you do need to be "crafty"
or good with your hands. You will learn 'good form' as you become more experienced.
Above
all you need to have a strong work ethic.
It is a relaxed studio atmosphere so you will need
much self motivation. I don't have time to supervise because I will be throwing pots.
As sales demand increases I need someone who can relieve me of the many studio chores
so that I can spend more time making pots.
The points I am looking for are:
- A local person, not more than 15 minutes from the Brownstown studio. Please do not apply if you live
further away.
- Ceramics experience is desirable but not essential.
- Someone who appreciates pottery and enjoys working with clay. It should not be just for
a paycheck.
- An outgoing personality. There will be only two or three of us, so we need
to be good friends.
- An understanding of how to work efficiently without wasting time.
I know most of the short cuts and will be happy to show you how.
- Good strength. I
make a lot of pots in a day and some of the lifting can be 50 lbs or more.
- Quick to learn.
There is so much to learn you need to be able to remember many procedures and details, though no qualifications
are required.
- Not proud. Many chores are menial but they have to be done. I have to
do them...
- Retail experience is desirable.
- Reliability,
punctuality and a sense of responsibility is important to me. I am old fashioned and like predicability and consistency.
Typical work duties will include, after training.
-
Slabwork. Slumping into molds and adding decorative handles. Also assembly of thrown bowls onto slab.
- Extruding.
- Loading and unloading bisque kilns. Putting bisque away.
- Loading and unloading glaze kilns. Packing pots.
- Glaze seiving and testing.
- Waxing pot bottoms in preparation for glazing.
- Glazing pots eventually after
training.
- Pugging and weighing clay.
- Signing pots.
- Cleaning and keeping equipment and tools in designated places. This is a significant part of the work.
- Feeding the cats. ha-ha.
I do all the throwing, trimming and handle pulling
since I need to keep the integrity of the work my own.
The more I am able to sit at the wheel,
the more work gets done so I need someone who can keep me at the wheel. Is this you?
At this point in the winter calender, I am just trying to select an assistant for work starting in spring 2010.
If you are seriously interested in this position please email me at teaface@ptd.net telling me why you think I should choose you and including any relevant experience. Thank you for your interest.

Please do not just send me a resume
- it will not be considered.
